NAUTICAL TREND - KNOW THE ROPES
How-To | Posted by Elizabeth Joss on Nov. 8, 2012, 2:15 p.m.
All aboard! Our Indiemode style team is here to get you seaworthy with the latest nautical trend tips. This is a trend that just keeps coming back – a true classic that can be styled accordingly, no matter what the occasion. Sailor style can be fun, chic, subtle or even elegant, depending of course on the look you want to achieve.
The nautical fashion trend started way back in the 1800’s when the French government added stripes to the uniforms worn by sailors as a way to identify them. Queen Victoria then popularized the look in 1846 when she dressed the Prince of Wales (who was four years old at the time) in a little sailor suit. Style icons such as Princess Diana and the Dutchess of York similarly chose sailor suits for all their page boys. However, the trend became widely accessible when Coco Chanel took this navy, red and white look to the catwalk.
Different Types of Sailor Outfits and How to Get These Looks
1. Simple Sailor Style
Alexa Chung certainly knows how to keep it simple yet trendy. You too can own this playful look by wearing micro shorts together with a white top or chemise. Add a striking nautical-style handbag that draws attention – but this should be the only nautical piece you’re wearing. Don heels and subtle jewellery to complete this casual look.
2.Laidback Nautical Look
Kate Moss opts for more relaxed sailor look. To get this look, wear navy skinny jeans with a striped tee. Add a neutral bag and matching flat pumps. Want a splash of colour? Then throw on a contrasting red jacket and you’re good to go.
Alternatively, team a striped crop top or loose Ruched top with white straight-leg Capri pants and nude heels for a smart-casual ensemble.
3.Elegant Nautical Ensemble
Prefer a more traditional, elegant look? Gossip Girl star, Leighton Meester, wears this stunning sailor dress with pretty collar. Complete with empire waistline and white ribbed piping on the collar, this is a look that clearly says ‘sweetheart chic’.
4.Chic Nautical Appearance
Emmy Rossum keeps it chic in this high-waisted skirt with gold button detail, simple striped tee and light grey handbag. How pretty is this look?
Quick Tips for Wearing Stripes
- Be creative with red, white and navy garments and accessories.
- Wear one striped garment with another solid one – don’t wear more than one nautical piece!
- Keep it simple, classic and classy.
- Pair your outfit with subtle silver jewellery or if the jewellery is the focus, make sure it’s chunky and detailed (preferably something with anchors, ropes or chains).
- Pair a sailor-inspired outfit with a nude bag or clutch.
- If you’re wearing capris and are on the short side – rather don heels and steer clear of flats in order to give you added height.
- Team white skinny jeans with a striped top by day or alternatively add a pretty chiffon blouse by night.
- Denim also looks fabulous when teamed with stripes.
- Details add an edge to a sailor outfit so know the main features of the trend thoroughly. We suggest you look at photographs for inspiration.
